Victoria Dolphina Bastel celebrated her birthday on Friday, September 26, 2008 at Pet
Orphans with some of her closest friends. In lieu of birthday gifts, Dolphina
emailed her 931 friends to donate to Pet Orphans in honor of her birthday. Her friends
surprised her by sponsoring a dog run in her honor.
Thank you Dolphina for your generosity and thoughtfulness.
Pet Orphans would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Morning Side Elementary for raising money to be Helping
Heros to TEN dogs and cats far surpassing their initial goal of being a Helping Hero to one dog or cat. HEP
Coordinator Fernando Mendoza, an animal lover himself, got the fundraiser started. Teachers Sandra Flores
and Alma Guerrero did an excellent job organizing everything as the excited students brought their money in
to contribute to the cause. Mrs. Flores designed and created the bulletin board (pictured above) so the
whole school could see which dogs and cats were benefiting from their hard work. If one looks closely, Pet
Orphans is spelled out in Milkbone Dog Biscuits!
The kids, as one can see, are extremely proud of themselves as they well should be. One of the classrooms
found that giving felt so good, they are now raising money to donate to a homeless shelter. We are awed and
humbled by their generous spirit. It reminds us why Humane Education is such an important program. Our
goal is to foster kindness, empathy and respect for all living things. Schools like Morning Side Elementary
are proof that the program is working. Thank you to Assistant Principal Danny Alvarez for scheduling Humane
Education presentations for the entire school and thank you again to the students of Morning Side Elementary
School for inspiring us all.
Look at those smiles!

Thank you to Metrormint, Kettle Chips and Wellshire for making our 4th of July BBQ a success. For $5.00 BBQ
attendees received their choice of a hamburger, hot dog, or veggie burger, with a slice of watermelon, a bag of
chips and a beverage.
We raised a little over $500 for our friends at Pet Orphans of Southern California.
Thanks again for your participation and support, you made this possible!
Pet Orphans is extremely grateful for all the people who donated to help with the costs of caring for the dogs
rescued from the Lancaster hoarding situation. An anonymous donor stepped forward and wanted to thank them too.
The donor offered to sponsor a party to thank all the generous supporters. On June 28th, Pet Orphans threw a Luau
to show how much we appreciate everyone who helped us out. Our Accountant, Van Le, graciously hosted the partygoers
in her home. With the help of Hillcrest Party Rental, who donated all the chairs and tables, and Josephine and
Benificio Mendez, who made the delicious food, the party was enjoyed by all. Thanks to volunteers and staff, a few
of the Lancaster dogs were able to come along to show their gratitude. Below are some pictures from our fun event.
