Our Founders

diane and virginia

Years ago, Diane & Virginia rescued a distressed puppy from a construction zone –where the 405 Freeway now cuts through Sepulveda Pass. The year was 1962, and at the time the two friends had no idea that this act of kindness would lead to decades of animal rescue. Indeed, the two continued their pet friendly ways, and in 1973, when the space in their homes became scarce, and the costs abundant, Diane, Virginia & 18 of their friends incorporated the Pet Orphans Fund California now known as Pet Orphans of Southern California, making it one of the oldest and largest private shelters in Southern California.

Pet Orphans found its permanent home at 7720 Gloria Ave, in Van Nuys in 1982 and began its 11 year building program. Today, the shelter, its rescue and adoption process, Humane Education, Animal & Human enrichment training and Community Outreach to assist the public with medical and training expenses, stands as a testament to what loving hearts accomplish when they set out to do something right. Thanks to the wonderful support of caring people who donate funds and many hours of love & compassion, these efforts will continue on for many decades to come.

Diane & Virginia along with the staff and volunteers and most importantly the orphans, invite you to embark upon a wonderful journey of bringing animals and people together in a harmonious world of fun and life long happiness. In hopes you will open your heart and homes to an orphaned animal.
